For those of you who don’t know, Angel Villalona, a top prospect on the Giants, has turned himself into Dominican authorities as a prime suspect in the murder of 25 year old Mario Felix de Jesus Velete.
Mr. Villalona is facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted, which would be a very unfortunate end to a bright future as a solid Major League player. Villalona was given what was at the time the largest signing bonus in club history when he signed as a 16 year old out of the Dominican Republic.
This past year he played for the San Jose Giants where he hit .267 with 9 homers and 42 RBI’s in 74 games.
The Giants have released the following statement regarding the incident:
“The Giants were disappointed to learn that there was an incident in the Dominican Republic last night in which an individual was killed and one of our minor league prospects, Angel Villalona, may have been involved. We will monitor the situation closely and trust that the judicial process in the Dominican Republic will resolve the matter promptly and fairly.”
I hope this is all just a misunderstanding and things work out, because if not, the Giants will have lost a valuable future asset tonight.
