Pack Break: 2008 Donruss Elite Extra Edition

30 01 2010

I cracked this pack awhile ago, but I thought I’d share it with you along with my opinion of the Donruss Extra Elite Edition product.  The guy at the card shop said that this set, Elite Extra Edition, gave you a bunch of rookies and a possibility of an auto.  I didn’t get an auto, but I got something a bit better than base:

The highlight of the pack was a Scott Green School Colors insert #/1500.  Cool card, but who’s Scott Green?  That’s my main problem with this product.  When I’m opening a pack of a product, I want to know who the players are.  Unless you pull a Gordon Beckham, you’re not going to have a clue.  The cards are shiny and have a decent design, but not knowing these players bothers me.  What do you think of Donruss Elite Extra Edition?

Hilarious Pack Break Video!

11 01 2010

Angelsfan and I stumbled across this on youtube and felt that you all should see it. No, this is not us, nor anybody we know, but we were laughing out loud watching this. My favorite part is the pack that they break of “Goodwill” Champions, but there are many giggles throughout.

Leave a comment letting us know your favorite part!!

2007 Ultimate Collection Mini-Box Break

10 01 2010

Again, it’s just a pack. But it’s a pack with the same number of hits as some entire boxes. I picked up a hobby pack of 2007 Ultimate Collection from dacardworld.com for $37.95. It promises 2 memorabilia cards, one autograph, and one base card per pack. It boils down to about $9 per card, and as is the way with most high end products, you are making a gamble on the hits that you pull. Unfortunately, I probably didn’t get my money’s worth, but it’s still really fun to pull 3 hits out of one pack!! I know you folks aren’t here to hear me babble, so let’s move on to what I got, shall we?

Card#1:

Chad Cordero base #374/450. I remember watching this guy when he was in college. He was dominant!

Card #2:

C.C. Sabathia Ultimate Numbers dual game used #26/52. He’s now on the Jankees. ‘Nuff Said! I actually do like this card though. Low serial number and a cool design. My only regret is that it’s not a patch. Hmmm.

Card #3:

Khalil Greene autograph. UGGGGGG! Come on, for $38 I should get a better auto than that! Jeez Upper Deck, why is this guy even in a high end checklist?? This would be a weak hit for a Padres fan to pull out of retail pack! OK, maybe not, but still, you understand my point.

Card #4:

Howie Kendrick patch #01/25. This is the first time that I have pulled a sick nasty ebay 1/1, or as the rest of us call them, cards with serial number 1/something. I’m not a fan of 1 color patches in the least. If you’re going to give me a patch card, at least give it two colors or a piece of jersey attached or something, because right now, it just looks like a piece of normal, red Angels jersey. I can tell that it’s part of a patch by feeling it, but this is a weak effort at a patch card. Oh well, at least I can trade it to Angelsfan for something cool.

All in all, fun to open, but not the greatest hits. You’ve got to get lucky with your hits on these or you will not get your money’s worth, but I guess that’s the same with almost all wax. Such is the nature of our hobby.

If anybody wants to trade for any of these cards, let me know, except for the Kendrick which will at some point be traded to Angelsfan.

2009 Sweet Spot Rip: 2 Mini-boxes

9 01 2010

First of all, mini-boxes are just packs in this set, but they all come individually bundled up in little boxes. Moving on, as part of my Christmas cash spending spree, I ordered two packs of 09 Sweet spot from dacardworld for $17 apiece. It’s not that I don’t want to support my shop, but they don’t sell loose packs of this stuff, only boxes for like $140. I got some decent stuff, but it probably wasn’t a good deal for the cash. Nonetheless, I had never experienced Sweet Spot before, and it was fun to break.

Pack 1:

Pack 1, as all packs do, had 7 base cards and one hit.  I didn’t scan the base cards, but if anybody’s looking for a specific one, let me know and I’ll see if I have it. The hit in the first pack left a little bit to be desired, but he’ll probably become a superstar now as a new member of the 2009 New York Yankees.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Curtis Granderson:

I’m not really a fan of  plain white and grey jersey pieces in high end products like sweet spot, but I can live with this hit.

The next pack was better, as I pulled the Sweet Spot autograph of the box. Again, I didn’t scan the base cards, but here’s the hit:

Mike Jacobs #174/199. Well, it’s not Jeter, but pulling the Sweet Spot autograph of the box in only two packs was pretty cool. Overall, I had fun opening these packs, and my advise would be that if you have the cash, go for it!! Opening the pack and seeing that one card that’s thicker than the rest of the pack combined, and knowing that you have one of the most original autographed card designs is a great feeling. I may just have to buy a couple more of these soon…

Mini-Madness

29 12 2009

As some of you are aware, I opened 4 retail packs of T206 and 4 retail packs of Goodwin on Christmas that I got in my stocking. Noting particularly amazing, but I thought that I’d just show you guys the minis. The 206 ones are all Piedmont backs (I have yet to pull any of the variations) and all of the Goodwin ones are normal as well. Without further ado, here they are:

I really like the Fingers and Lewis from the Goodwin, and the Michael Young 206 cards. The horizontality works well. Is that a word? Horizontality? Probably not. Oh yeah, I also got a Vladdie but I already gave it to Angelsfan.

Topps Chrome: The Non-colored Refractors

28 12 2009

I finally got off my lazy butt and scanned the regular refractors from my hobby box and retail packs that I got for Christmas. Here they are:

Dacardworld.com Purchase

28 12 2009

Angelsfan and I placed an order on Dacardworld.com for a hobby box of 2008 Baseball Heroes, a hobby pack of 2007 Ultimate collection promising 2 relics and an autograph, and 2 mini-boxes of this year’s Sweet Spot. When they arrive, we will break them one at a time and post all of the results right here on Omegawax. Wish us luck!

Be on the lookout for our breaks starting later this week!
